Safety begins at home

Many parents don’t realise that the most dangerous place for their child is his own home. A child is naturally inquisitive but has yet to understand what is dangerous and it is up to his carers to provide a safe environment. A child is always learning. One day he will just sit, the next he can crawl. One day he will stretch towards that shiny object. The next he will have pulled the saucepan off the cooker. Parents need to keep that one step ahead and to have eyes in the back of their head, always anticipating what he will do next. But it is impossible always to watch your child, so you can minimise accidents by removing as many of the dangers as you can. Dangerous chemicals (and this includes things like the contraceptive pill) should be kept out of reach – preferably locked away. Sharp implements like knives should never be left lying around. Remove ornaments and anything with glass in it to safekeeping. And NEVER leave your baby unattended in the bath – or close to water anywhere within baby’s reach, even if only an inch deep.

Find somewhere safe – a playpen for example - where you can put baby when you cannot watch him. Finally make sure you tidy up all those toys – baby can make the home a dangerous place for you too.
