The first few weeks of baby’s life are often a sort of settling in time when both of you are creating new routines. She will need to learn that this means food and pleasure and that means it’s time for sleep. She will learn about being loved and reassured in this rather strange place. At first, baby’s head is too heavy for her to move but this changes within weeks. Her eyesight is also improving rapidly and she will prefer looking at blocks of contrasting colour and things that look like faces. She will learn to recognise your face and your voice and respond by smiling. This is the time for mobiles with things to see and hear.

By four months, she will be exploring things with her hands and mouth so everything should be safe and clean. Small soft rattles and interesting things to explore are what she needs. By six months, she will almost be sitting (cushions or a chair to support her are useful at this time). She will be passing toys from one hand to another and you will be seeing her personality and tastes develop. She will remember things and her concentration spans are increasing as shown by the amount of time she spends examining things that interest her. Soon she will be crawling, walking and talking and all too soon she’ll be off to school!
